Now contrast that with a fund factsheet. Oh, it looks professional—clean fonts, pie charts, maybe a nice photo of a wind turbine or a smiling retiree on a beach. But beneath the glossy design lies the investment industry’s greatest achievement in ambiguity.
You know the drill. A wiggly line trending upwards over five years, labelled “past performance” in soft Helvetica. Somewhere on page two, a line in 8-point font: “This is not a guide to future performance.” Translation: “If it goes badly from here, don’t blame us.”
The Art of Telling You Nothing
Fund factsheets are often designed less to inform and more to reassure. They’re the investment equivalent of airline safety cards—everyone has to have one, but nobody expects to read it and feel better.
They’ll say things like:
- “Moderate risk profile” (so… it might go down, or not?)
- “Diversified multi-asset approach” (we’ve bought a bit of everything, hope you like surprises)
- “Style-neutral” (we don’t know what we are, but we’re sure it’s fine)
And then there’s the risk rating. Usually a number between 1 and 7, like a wine’s fruitiness level. A ‘5’? That’s either a thrilling blend of upside potential or a one-way ticket to sleepless nights—depending on which year you’re in.
A New Standard of Communication?
Imagine if your toaster behaved like a factsheet.
You: “What setting should I use?”
Toaster: “We cannot guarantee the toast quality in future, regardless of past performance.”
You: “Will it burn my crumpet?”
Toaster: “Risk rating: 4. Please consult your adviser.”
You: “I just want toast.”
Toaster: beeps in legalese
It would never sell.
What Clients Actually Want to Know
At GSI, we’ve learned something simple: clients don’t care about acronyms. They care about outcomes.
- Will this help me retire comfortably?
- Will I be okay if the market drops 15%?
- Should I be worried about inflation, or just the dog eating the post again?
We believe in using plain English. Not because clients aren’t clever, but because they’re busy. They’ve got lives to live, children to wrangle, roofs to fix, and yes—toast to make.
So here’s to your toaster. The most brutally honest appliance in your home. If only your pension provider could learn a thing or two from it.
